That is so true. Please read about this 2012 incident in a city and popular vacation destination that often calls itself the American Riviera...namely Santa Barbara. It is not generally considered a s**thole place, but this is similar to what happened on Jose Figueres in east San Jose. Actually, there were more victims in this crime.

losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/04/13/2-dead-1-injured-in-santa-barbara-murder-suicide/

A news story like this has probably occurred in a large number of US cities with 50,000 or more population at some point in the last 20 years. These crimes have occasionally occurred in smaller towns, too. You definitely can't judge a town's safety from crime from a single news story.

Don't know why it does not show as a "click on" link in blue...I typed it exactly as it was with no spelling or punctuation errors. Anyways, it is worth re-typing to read the story IMO. Especially caliguy92832 should read this.

Crime rate is up whilst the rest of the country is getting safer. Probably because money has been diverted from public safety to pay off union pensions... gotta scratch the unions' backs first here in the bay area...

The Time Deli, Falafel Drive-In, and Dia de Pesca (fish tacos) are three old school, cheap eats places that are within blocks of each other of the corner of Bascom and San Carlos. Just had the BBQ Special on Fridays at Time. Long may they thrive!

I'm from SJ and grew up on the "East Side" (80's - 98) East SJ is basically east of 101/680. From McKee/Alum Rock down towards Tully Rd/Capital Exp.

Everything north of Mabury was considered "ok", downward towards to the Evergreen area towards the hills and some parts of Silver Creek were the decent areas. (of course these are the areas where the houses cost over 700k - 2mil)

It was the area "between" Berryessa/North SJ to Evergreen that has majority of the trouble. Of course everyone knows "Story and King" area. Before you worried about getting jumped and a few drive by's, now you worry about actual shootings and killings.

Of course, SJPD's funding and lower number of cops, young thugs not being afraid of being seen or doing things in pubic, cost of living and lack of education (not that they don't have schools, but some kids just didnt' bother going to school) contribute to the problem.

I wonder how the people that live at Silver Creek Country Club would feel about that statement, it is on the east side of San Jose, or the Doctor's and Lawyers that live in the Alum Rock Area which is also the east side of San Jose!

Meh,

Anywhere on the East side or South San Jose is undesirable because of traffic. If you live where there is traffic to get where you need to go, you are by strict definition, not in a good neighborhood. I'm sure that the real estate agents that sold you that "wonderful" place in East San Jose forgot to mention that. And lets be careful about mentioning "doctors" and "lawyers" as well. Thousands of doctors are poorly paid and most lawyers are out of work.

People always say that, but literally EVERY lawyer/JD I know has a job - mostly very good 6-figure jobs, either practicing law or doing something related (like community/public relations). Maybe I just know the cream of the crop, or perhaps the job market struggles are exaggerated? Curious now to do an actual study on the matter, lol.

This is what I'm thinking. I do hear it's very tough for new grads, but that's hardly all or most lawyers.
