Currently I am residing in Sacramento and I am considering a move to the Silicon Valley. I have a PMP and CCNA along with a lot of network/unix/management/entrepreneurial/coding experience and there are no shortage of jobs that I could do there. Here in the Sacramento area, tech jobs are very scarce and highly competitive.

Home prices here in Sac are below 400K and it looks like prices there are usually above 1M for something decent. So it leads me to the question, what strategy have others leveraged in a similar situation? Raw mathematics would say my income would need to nearly triple to live in a small 1500 sqft home which doesn't seem possible.

Other options include (most preferred), coming in one day a week and telecommuting from home the other days or moving to less desirable areas with a long commute into work.

Thanks in advance!

I would move to Bay area and live in some smaller condo instead of single family home. You can find condo 2/2 nice condo for 400-500k in San Jose.

Stay where you are if you want to buy a home. Buying a condo for over $400K is ridiculous, when you can buy a home for the same price where you are now. If you come to this area, be prepared to downsize.

Buying a 400k condo is ridiculous for sure but you have much more chance here for success then in Sacremento. I would do it. Condo for start and x years later upgrade on house.

I might be able to find a home in SJ for 600K if I look hard enough. But, I think to downsize to a Condo will be a bit tough.

For now, I am going to try to find a telecommute job or maybe just stay in a hotel during the week.

Thanks
