Don't buy a condo in an area you are not familiar with. Wait and rent for a year at least. Who knows if you will like your job? If you want to stay in San Jose? If you will like the area you bought a condo in just because it's a short sale. San Jose is a weird place lots of little pockets of okay parts and then pockets of not okay parts. It's not a good idea to lock yourself into a place before you know much about it. Just wait a year, prices will go down even more by then if you still want to buy a condo.

Ok.. It is me again.. Found a house that we really liked. It is in Alum Rock, San Jose; by the hills with a zip code 95127 (Macbeth Dr). We have to decide very quickly. It is a foreclosure with a lot of offers. Does anybody have any idea about the area? We did talk one of the neighbors who said that he loved living there and the neighbors were great. We do not care about the schools as our kid is already in college. We would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks...

I agree with this. You have to drive through crappy parts to get to and from home and you may have to drive further through town to get to nicer shopping, dining, etc. but the Alum Rock area is very nice once you get to the hills...the further west you head down Alum Rock Ave., it goes to s**t.

It would probably be a very private and quiet location. You're likely to have a commanding view of the valley. It's not close to anything, though, so you'll be driving a lot.

Thank you all for your thoughts.. We are making an offer on that house today. It probably is highly unlikely that they will accept our offer as there are at least 6 more offers on the house. But we will try anyway. If it is meant to be, it shall be.. We will keep you posted..

Unfortunately someone overbid us so we couldn't get the house on Macbeth. My offer on the S.Winchester & Neal townhouse is still out there with no response yet.I think it's been about 3 months now. Frustrating very frustrating.(( Today I saw a listing with a 95136 zip. The house is on La Crescent Loop. Should we just pass or is it in a better neighborhood of Blossom Valley, if it is Blossom Valley indeed!!
Thank you all.

I grew up off Arizona Ave./Dixon Rd., which is just up the road from the dump and the smell used to be much worse. The smell does occasionally pick up when the wind is blowing a certain way and especially during summer heat waves. The smell is not in any way an every day occurance and is not just limited to Milpitas. The Alviso area of San Jose and also the southwestern portion of Fremont sometimes gets the smell too.

I checked out Elkwood Dr. on Google Maps and that is close to the dump. You probably would experience an occasional odor. Like I said though, it's not nearly as much of an issue as people make it out to be. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in and I very rarely notice the odor when I visit them. I actually notice the odor far more often where I work in southwestern Fremont.

The further east you go toward the hills in Milpitas, the less likely you will be to experience the dump smell.
Residents of Alviso neighborhood are not recipients of Alviso sewage treatment plant and the dump because this neighborhood is located on northwest of these odor sources, but they are recipients of fresh sea smells coming from north salt ponds. Wind blows odor smells to southeast direction.
