For those who have already done this, how much does relocation cost ? In all worth about a 100 kgs.
No furniture, just electronics, kitchen utensils, books and clothes.
Do you know of any good and reliable packers and movers in Sydney ? If I have this info
I can discuss the compensation with the HR with a firm understanding of the costs in case they cite
relocation assistance and ask me to take a pay cut.

Is there a checklist of the things I need to do before I depart Sydney ?

Thanks.

You really need to ask your moving cost question on an Australia forum.

Are you transferring with the same employer? They may have a preferred goods mover. One option to consider is to pack your books in a suitcase and take on your flight, use UPS for your goods. UPS's rates are on their website. Take only books that are very important to you because of weight.

I suggest you obtain and international driver's license, auto insurance and health insurance good for about 6 months before you leave. Make sure that your US visa permits employment. Oh, and have an address to use for the delivery of your goods. Frankly I would use what we call here a mail drop, a UPS Store. In that way you can pick them up at a time convenient for you.

Excess baggage, unaccompanied luggage, worldwide, by sea freight or air freight. shows ~US$1600

Suggestions to reduce shipping weight:
  • Electronics is cheap in US and the voltage/frequency is different. Sell it in Sydney and buy the latest gadgets here
  • Books can be shipped by surface saving few $$
  • Kitchen utensils - unless of emotional value, you can buy most of them here is US
