Coincidentally, 98.5 KFOX recently had a poll of the best ice cream in the area.

For me, I agree with those who say Willow Glen Creamery.

We prefer organic ice cream, so we buy it and eat it at home.

Palo Alto is a nice ice creamery, though.

I can add that Willow Glen Creamery is an amazing place to get ice cream. Usually pretty busy on the weekend, but well worth the 5 minute wait.

I have a new one to add... (not a new shop, just new to the list): Mission City Creamery in Santa Clara. They make their own, it is to die for. And the flavors are fairly "normal," too (nod to the OP who doesn't want lavendar. LOL).

Mission City Creamery

We get all our birthday ice cream cakes there which are also wonderful.

If you are willing to go far and like Tropical fruity flavors, Mitchell's ice cream in SF is good. Some shops (such as Crop Pure water) stock 2 gallon tubs in San Jose.
