If you work normal work hours with heavy traffic morning and evening rush hours, after a week of commuting you will be looking to immediately move to the San Jose Area.

OMG....that commute is totally not doable. However, the BART will be opening in June of 2018, so you may not need to move to SJ, but you'll have to be closer to a BART line and endure a super slow 680/880 for awhile. Lots of new building going on at the moment though. You can get a nice place for a million still. The area's building up.

Have you folks actually tried that commute, or are you speculating? While I live in San Jose, I often have early morning business in Santa Cruz that causes me to drive back to San Jose right during the morning commute. On those days, I've always been surprised at how easy a commute is actually is. The traffic flows right along. As noted by acenturi above who did this commute for years, the traffic on 17 is the easiest part of the commute. It's 85/280/101 which are the worst parts, and you have to deal with them even even if you live in the valley.

I do this commute almost every day and have for almost 15 years. I have some flexibility in my work hours, which makes it more doable. It's far from impossible, obviously. As others have said, 17 is not the bad part (unless there is an accident) - it's 85/280/101.
