A man was robbed and sexually assaulted Thursday night near a walking path on the border of Palo Alto and Menlo Park, police said.
The 25-year-old victim, a Redwood City resident, was walking on the path near Alma Lane and East Creek Drive at about 6 p.m. when two men approached him, said Menlo Park police Detective Jeff Vasquez.
The men surrounded the victim, who had been in downtown Palo Alto looking for a job, and began to rob him, taking his money and a small amount of jewelry, Vasquez said.

One of the attackers then ran away, but the other man "stayed behind and capitalized on the fear" of the victim, pushing him into nearby bushes, Vasquez said.

The attacker partially undressed the victim and sexually assaulted him, though police are still investigating exactly what took place, Vasquez said. He said investigators found semen on the victim's clothing.
During the assault, the victim managed to fight off the attacker by grabbing an object on the ground and hitting the man in the head with it, Vasquez said. The attacker then ran away.

Vasquez said the incident probably lasted between five and eight minutes.
Investigators have identified a person of interest in the sexual assault — a man who was being treated for a head injury Friday at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View — but that person has not been arrested, Vasquez said. The hospital alerted police about the man when he arrived at the hospital early Friday morning, Vasquez said.

In interviews with officers, the man in the hospital has been evasive about how he was injured, Vasquez said.

"We've got some strong suspicions about him being there, but he hasn't confessed, he hasn't been positively identified by any witnesses," Vasquez said. "He's strongly a person of interest, but we just don't have anything quite yet to hammer down the nail."

The victim has been too distraught to identify his attacker or give a full statement, Vasquez said. Police have no information at this point about the second suspect.

Menlo Park police ask anyone who witnessed the attack to contact Detective Jeff Vasquez at 650-330-6363.

I've honestly never heard of a man getting raped before.. not while out of prison. Especially when it's 1 vs 1. Hell, I'd just run away -- he can keep my wallet but leave my bung hole alone.
