We may be relocating to Santa Clara, have a four year old daughter so schools are a concern for us. Will rent before buying something so it's not urgent for us to find our "home", but we want an idea of where to be. Would prefer little traffic in and around us. Looking for a feeling of community, a nice neighborhood for making new friends, especially for our daughter. We don't have any family on the West Coast. We live in New Jersey now but not thrilled with neighborhood, the way it's laid out is awkward. Thanks for any feedback you give!!

Santa Clara is surrounded by heavy traffic on all sides. If you want to avoid it, best to live really close to where you work - that would be something like the Rivermark area of Santa Clara, which has been built up recently as a place for middle-income engineer types to raise their kids in a family friendly environment and not have to commute for a long time.

I am not sure of our budget yet, unfortunately. Will depend on salary from expected job offer. We would need a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, around 2,000 sq. ft, maybe a little more. Need a laundry room !!

You will probably want to stick to San Jose (Almaden), Campbell, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale in your search for rental houses...Rent for what you are looking for will be avg 2500 a month. If you aren't picky about curb appeal, interior, etc...you may find something in the 2200-2400 range.

Have a look in the general area of Lawrence Expressway and the streets of Benton-Homestead-Pruneridge, all the way to Stevens Creek Blvd. Sorry I don't know my compass directions in that area so I am being rather general.
