Trying to get around the high cost of leasing a home in Santa Fe, are there housing areas either N (or NE or NW) of Santa Fe that might be more easily affordable (possibly)? I am unfamiliar with Los Alamos or the tribal lands and just wondering if anyone has knowledge of these areas. We're wanting to participate in the activities available in Santa Fe but not necessarily living in the city limits.
Housing North, Northeast, and Northwest of Santa Fe is the most expensive in the entire area. If you're looking for affordable housing, you'd be better off looking in the Southwest section of the city (and the county lands further out) or even in the Southeast outside the city limits.
You mentioned Los Alamos... I think there are some lower priced houses there, but it's 45 minutes from SF.
As I've studied the map and made a recent trip to SF, as well as look at the newspaper online to see rentals it's pretty clear to me that what we are paying $900 here in E. NM will more than likely be $1200 and more. I'm really hoping to get into Santa Fe. Love the city, love the area, love alot about it. We are used to having a 2 to 3bdrm/2 bth house with fenced back yard for our 9yo black labrador. I'd really hate to live w/o a fenced back yd and not sure if dh will go that. We have some lead time (presently 8 mos out) to do more research, etc. Can anyone tell me what the SW section of the city is like; i.e. issues? I'm also open to areas like Cerrillos, Galisteo, Teseque, Pecos if necessary and of course, El Dorado. Insights anyone from your experience moving to and into the City Different?
Do check out Eldorado. There seems to be an increased number of rentals homes out here in the past two years due to the slow housing market. I live in Eldorado and I find it a wonderful place to live. One really nice thing as a renter is that you will find a lot of amenities, and houses on 1-2 acre lots, as opposed to a cramped subdivision.
I have seen some out at Eldorado where the prices (buying) have really come down. The problem is.....no (AFAIK) indoor pool, and I'd be driving into SF 3-5 days a week for that... :-(
But I've got a couple of other areas to check out first, and then we'll see. I haven't been to check anything out there seriously yet, just looking online and keeping in touch with an agent.
I'm really glad that Eldorado worked out for you, Towanda!
Wow. The whole center looks fantastic...a 50-meter pool (fewer flipturns, LOL), all the standard amenities.....AND ice skating?!? I've always wanted to learn to ice skate well, and I didn't take advantage of that in Texas, when I should have.
Thanks for the info, Towanda!
I'm going to lose my indoor pool in Feb or March. They're moving to new facilities then, and the therapy and lap pools are not a part of the package! I was really disappointed, but not surprised.
The other option available to me is crappy, but I will use it on a punchcard pass until I move, so it's better than nothing.
