I'll be in the Santa Fe area soon, and from what I've read, SF hosts a very large art community. What suggestions would one have to visit an art museum in SF?

In addition to an art museum, what would also be some good sites to see for a quick trip through town? I've seen some pictures of down town which look pretty interesting.

My favorite art museum is the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.

It's at 217 Johnson Street, right on the Plaza.

Santa Fe has MANY nice art, history and cultural museums.

If you want the best history museum in town, my suggestion is The New Mexico History Museum. It is just an amazing place. It is right on the Plaza, behind the Palace of the Governors at 113 Lincoln Ave.

While you are down in that area, the Plaza is not to be missed, and you can take as little or as long there as you wish.

The downtown area is small enough to walk around so you can see lots of cool stuff. There's the cathedral and Loretto chapel, the Oldest House, the market outside the Governor's Palace, the San Miguel Mission church (oldest church in US), there are lots of cool restaurants and coffee shops, you could even hike up to Canyon Rd and gawp at the artwork outside the galleries. And you could take a walking tour and learn about the history and characters of SF.

You absolutely must take a stroll down Canyon Road! There is where you will find the largest selection of art galleries in town. It's like a day at the museum and it runs the whole gamut for are. There are Russian art galleries, eccentric sculptures, native inspired, contemporary, fantasy, Tibetan, frontier art, and so much more. Many of the galleries have beautiful courtyards with impressive gardens adorned with cool sculptures.

I second this reccommendation. I spent three hours at the NM History museum and I still feel like I didn't take it all in and want to return again. It's a very stimulating museum with a lot of dialogue Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, Pioneer, and modern day New Mexico.

Within an easy stroll from the historic plaza you can visit the NM History Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and the Gerogia O'Keeffe Museum to name just three. The state capitol (called the Roundhouse) building also hosts an extraordinary collection of NM arts. Between all the museums and the galleries around town your problem will be what to choose for your "quick trip through town." Too bad you don't have more time!

No one has mentioned the New Mexico Art Museum across from the Plaza. Some really good exhibits there.
