Looking at Santa Fe for retirement. Any comments where to live. We would like a 1800-2500 sq. ft. home in a nice area and notice Villa Sonata

Villa Sonata is a newer Centex development in the southwest quadrant of the city. If your budget is in the 200K-300K range, then you might like this area. To me, the lots are too small and the development too dense. In that same price range you could find homes in Rancho Viejo and other subdivisions in town, as well as homes on over an acre in places like Eldorado (although homes of the size you want will be in the higher range of the 200Ks and lower 300's - and of course, more).
There are good choices in several areas, so don't make any hasty decisions and do come out for a visit or two to look around at neighborhoods and see what you can get for your hard-earned dollars in the various areas.

I'm not a huge fan of Villa Sonata because the houses are too crowded together and the development seems sort of just stuck out there in the middle of a field. It's too planned for me, I guess. But the area seems safe enough and it's fairly convenient to the south end of town - a 5-7 minute drive to the grocery store, Target and Sams Club. Personally, I'd want to be closer to the historic stuff and museums if I were going to retire here. Come on out and visit and you'll be able to tell which parts of town you like!
