Hi: I have not been to Santa Fe, so I'm curious about the area north of town where Santa Fe Community College is located. According to the map, it looks like a rather long drive, north on Richards Avenue, through an area which does not appear to have a lot of streets (is not residential??). And then, on the east side of the road there is SFCC, which is designated as being in Santa Fe, and the west side of the road there is another school, New Mexico Highlands University, (looks like a good one, too), but is said to be in a different city. Las Vegas, New Mexico.

What is the general area like, is there any housing, and what is the drive like, to SFCC from SF proper?

SF is attractive, to me, as a retirement location due to SFCC, the yoga and Aikido, the Chavez aquatic center, and lack of natural disasters, 10,000 waves, and the art and music there. And med mj seems to be available, too. The downside consists of warnings about crime and the expense of living. But polically and artistically I think I'd be more at home there than anywhere.

Your input appreciated!

mvintar, this map gives you a good view of the area around SFCC:

Location - New Mexico Highlands University

NM Highlands has a branch in Santa Fe at SFCC. The main campus is in Las Vegas.

Come visit! Santa Fe sounds like a possible match for your retirement. We have a cabin on the high road above & love SF for all its natural grocery choices, a healthfood nut's dream! Plus some of the best new mexican food!

I spent a week down from our cabin to a casita right off the plaza last winter, a locals special. I had the time of my life just walking the old town, looking at architecture, up Canyon Rd., the art, the coffee shops, the churches, the market at the railyard, and ahhhh... the food!

SFCC is not that far from the plaza area, maybe a 10-15 minute drive. Its true that it is not right in the middle of a residential area, but there are some residential areas very close by, like the Rancho Viejo neighborhood. I believe there are buses that run from the college to to various areas in town too.

New Mexico Highlands main campus is in Las Vegas, NM, which is about an hour drive north of Santa Fe.
