Last year, we had a swallow nest above our front door. It was disgusting and messy. We did not notice it until it was fully built and had eggs in it, so we could not knock it down until after they were gone. This year, I want to be proactive and put something up to prevent them before they start. (Hopefully they have not started yet - last year it was about July when I noticed them). The area they were in is in an overhang over the front door, about 60 x 60 inches. I want to avoid something ugly there. I am thinking maybe something temporary that I can take down once the nesting season is over. Unfortunately, I am not in Santa Fe full time so I cannot just go out every day and knock down the nest as they start to build. Any ideas? What has worked for you?

I have put up metal mesh screen to block the corners. Mesh that had about 1/2 inch squares. About six small nails to hang it and then garbage bag ties to secure it.

Thanks for the ideas! I have a plan to try putting up when I am down there next. I bought 2 cheap tension curtain rods and some bird netting. I will put up the tension rods at either end and drape the bird netting across and secure it with twist ties.

I am not sure when it ends. I just know that by this time last year, we had a nest there with just hatched eggs in it, so I figure in maybe a month or two, they will be done nesting and will be heading south or whatever they do.
