With that budget be a desire for good schools, Santa Fe is going to be a challenge. Although it's ten-ish degrees warmer, Albuquerque may be a better fit for you, and is definitely more of a "sprawling, southwestern city." You should be able to find a home in that price range in the El Dorado school zone, or even possibly in LaCueva. Wlkbility to commerce will vary depending on the area. You can definitely find something in Rio Rancho in that price range, but walkability will be nil and the area might not be as culturally diverse (cue Rio Rancho rebuttal).

Alright, thank you.

Currently there are only 38 homes for sale under $275,000 that have 3 bedrooms and two baths in the city. All of them are in the southwest quadrant. Some are quite nice, but the schools in that district tend not to be high-performing. There are none in Rancho Viejo, and none in Eldorado. A possibility, although it's about a 40-minute drive into Santa Fe is the Los Alamos/White Rock community. There are 6 homes that fit your criteria there, and I've heard their schools are very good.

The above notwithstanding, I agree with jakabedy, if you're looking for a "sprawling city" in that price range, you might consider Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
