Hi! Trying to decide between a day trip from Santa Fe to either White Sands National Park or Great Sand Dunes National Park. Which would be your vote, and why?

What time of year? If it's now, and you're already in Santa Fe, I'd say go to White Sands. Leaving the state may involve quarantining in both directions. I can't keep up with the latest restrictions.

I've been to both parks and both are awesome. White Sands will be too hot in the summer, but enjoyable during the winter. Great Sand Dunes will be very cold this time of year and for most of the winter.

My thoughts exactly!

Neither one is an easy day trip if you plan on spending any time there -- even under good conditions. If you like the idea of 400+ ft. high sand dunes go to Great Sand Dunes. If you want to see snow-white sand dunes and a unique ecosystem head to White Sands. If I was going on a photography trip I would go to White Sands. If I had kids wanting to climb and tumble or slide down 100 ft. slopes I'd go to Great Sand Dunes.

I would be wise not to cross into Colorado and come back right now due to the quarantine requirement.

Been to both and White Sands is more interesting. We spent the better part of a day at White Sands, so it's probably more than a day trip (460 miles round trip). Great Sand Dunes is about a 350 mile round trip from Santa Fe.

I agree with White Sands. You can also catch Valley of Fires while you're down there.

In agree that both are great choices. This time of year I would pick White Sands due to better weather, and as others have said, especially given the quarantine requirements. Great Sand Dunes is a lot of fun in the month of June when the small river running out of the Sangre de Cristo mountains is at full flow and you can wade through and splash around. Fantastic for kids. Of course, so is White Sands.
