I'm currently looking for a part time place in Santa Fe and I wanted to know if the condos in the Zocalo community are:

(1) safe
(2) able to be left unoccupied for long periods

and finally.. are there tensions between racial groups in SF? Are hispanics and, say Indians treated well?

There are many part-time owners in Zocalo, and I haven't heard of break-ins there. I guess there are enough full timers there to keep the place reasonably active. Access is really only through the front gate, as 285 keeps the other side clear of any visitors, invited or otherwise.... The actual location you consider in Zocalo is very important - not because of the safety issue but for noise reasons. If you can get one of those inward-facing properties the road just goes away, whereas on the outer ones you need a good strong gurgly fountain in the back patio!

It's a multicultural, multi income, multi generational place - there are tensions a-plenty, but they are not an impediment to daily life.

Yes, it is safe to lock and leave in zocalo (I own a condo there) AND, perhaps more important to the budget minded, it is also safe to lock and leave at The Reserve, a gated community.

P.S. I have never noticed tensions between ethnic groups in Santa Fe and have always witnessed great respect for all Native Americans/Indians.

Zocalo is very nice, though a bit "non Santa Fe" in its feel. More "urban" in feel. You should have no problem with lock and leave - though I would recommend hiring someone to check in to the place for you while you are gone - run the water - clean the place as needed, etc. Always good when you are out of town and you need something done in the place.

You can also do fairly well on the NE side on the other side of the highway - much more of a Santa Fe feel.

Good luck with whatever you find.
