I know advertising is not aloud on this site however I am in desperate need of finding a house/casita to rent where I can bring 3 of my horses in/or 20 minutes outside Santa Fe. I have been looking on craigslist but haven't really found anything. I want the rent to include the horses not have to pay extra for them. If anyone has ANY advice please let me know!!

You want the horses to stay for free? Within twenty minutes of Santa Fe most places are pretty small and many people don't have water rights. People keep a couple of horses on a few acres some of which may be unusable because of arroyos. Three horses will be a serious burden on the land -- aren't they going to destroy every living thing within a fenced in area? When you and your horses are gone the landlord will have to deal with a invasion of annual weeds -- with spikes and thorns and stinks and stings and every nasty thing you can imagine. Thorn-laden tumbleweed will break loose in the fall and tumble all over his and his neighbors' property. In the fall everything will die and create a fire hazard. Why would a landlord agree to this for free?

Maybe you should think of something you could offer in return? Like maybe letting your landlords ride them for free? Offer to take care of his/her horses in addition to your own? Maintain the fences? Shovel the manure? Don't even think about offering the horse manure for free -- it's a glut on the market around here.

So think of something you can offer and write your own ad on Craigslist. I'm not guaranteeing it will work, but it won't cost you anything upfront.

Good luck.

craigslist. Is Glorieta too far out?

edit: Santa Fe -- you know, some property owners rent out situations specifically for horseowners.

Yes, Lahartman, but don't they charge more than a comparable place that does not allow horses? If it was my place I certainly would. The more desirable features a place has, the more the landlord charges.

My understanding was that the OP did not want to pay any more than he would for the human living space alone. And he said he had already been trying Craigslist. "I have been looking on craigslist but haven't really found anything." I took him at his word.

OOPs sorry, up too early and not reading closely.

Yes, one will usually pay more for horse facilities, unless you are out in the boondocks.

I rented a house here in Corrales. It is not cheap, but that is also a result of the location. I've been building a fence, and finishing up the barn which is also on the property.

Keeping horses: either a pauper's or a rich one's game.

Good point. I have friends who live in squalor for the privilege of keeping horses.
