It's about the forum, I'm sure, because it was my first reaction as well.

To be fair, this is the most objective, least contentious forum of this kind I have seen.

So really, the sentiment is somewhat misplaced. While there are assuredly a few negative sorts, it's nothing compared to some places.

Visit the Baltimore board if you want to gain some perspective.

Anyway, I am happy to see unemployment on the decline, but I seriously doubt Sarasota is going to shed its image as a tough job market. Something pretty substantial would have to change.

well, i think this forum does a great job of playing cheerleader for SRQ lol but as far as how it looks for jobs, it seems like a small town with way more homes than businesses. less specialized/less skilled jobs always have more applicants so retail, food service, sales, etc will not be short-staffed. Too many blue collar workers to available jobs ratio, too few white collar and technology career opportunities for potential incoming residents. Medical professionals probably do ok but probably gets harder the lower down the ladder/food chain you are. Self-employed, internet businesses - seems the way to go.

we are bringing our jobs so you can add 2 more employed residents to the statistics soon!

jnanner - Sarasota is like any beautiful vacation/resort-oriented town - meaning it has never been a big job mecca, it has ALWAYS been about tourism and retirement, or second homes. That said, over the past decade it has been slowly changing - there are more "green" type businesses, the three colleges are always growing and expanding, and there are actually some new, small clean type industries moving here. It doesn't change overnight.

But as I said, I have lived in Florida all my life and Sarasota has never been a town with "lots of jobs", unless one was in medical. Almost every nice small tourist town is the same.

Glad you have your jobs to bring, that makes your move all the sweeter! And welcome!

Unemployed people no longer receiving a check because benefits have run out are not counted in the 'unemployed' percent that we see as news. They go into another category of long term unemployed/under employed. That figure is 17%

I'm not sure I understand. If those people who no longer collect unemployment and haven't been employed, then total percentage of people actually unemployed in the area is nearly 1 in 5? Or is that 17% of the population that is unemployed added to the percentage of people collecting unemployment, which would make the total unemployed population 28%?
