Does anyone know how I can sign up to volunteer, IF Heaven forbid, the oil damages our beaches?? Id like to be prepared, as I think we all should be. Im interested in Manatee county but have not been able to find information since we are clean YAY! Anyone know if there are sites up and running just in case?

If you scroll through my posts in the Oil Slick thread, you'll find tons of information on ways you can help. (Sorry, too much information to repost here.)

As it stands right now, I don't believe Manatee County has a plan in tact in response.

If you are looking to actually clean up oil from our beaches or rescue oil soaked animals, BP is in charge. Only people who have previous HazMat training, as well as, those who have previous oil spill responder experience will be able to touch any oil/tar or any oiled creatures. The public may watch and report oil, but are not to become physically involved.

Once oil is seen on our beaches, BP and government agencies will be the first to respond. After BP and the government officials have assessed the situation in person, then local wildlife rescues like the Wildlife Center of Venice, and Save Our Seabirds may be asked to take in birds, etc. for possible cleaning.

Hope that helps.
