Has anyone any suggestions? I am wanting a runner fitted up a hardwood staircase. Would like seagrass, jute or some other natural fibre.
Wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations?

Home Depot has the carpet runners, cut to size, in the back of the store on large rolls. But I am not sure about the type you want. Have you gone to any carpet stores to see if they have it or can order it? What area do you live in? There are some online sites that make to order.

Any higher-end flooring shop will have it available to special order. What area are you in?

Smile Carpet runners

HI -

I spotted your post on carpet runners. We have a stairway, currently carpeted, which we plan to un-carpet and re-fit with hardwood retreads. I, too, love the look of carpet runners and have been checking them out.

The big issue seems to be whether you intend to cover the entire width of the step, or leave some hardwood showing at both sides. Because of the way our stairway is designed, the step is inside a little wall, and the bannister posts and railing is attached on top of this. So we could only look at carpet runner covering the entire width of the stair, which would require 36-37 inches.

The H D's in the Phoenix area do not stock the carpet runner on the rolls in 36 inch width. Don't know about Florida. And I have not seen jute on the rolls. They only stock the narrower widths designed to show the pretty hardwood on either side. Special order ?

There are a couple of fantastic internet stores that specialize in these runners and you can easily get the websites by Googling carpet runners.

One of these sites also sells high-end sets of carpeted treads which lay on each step. Now they are not cheap, probably $200+ for a set, but way cheaper than the runner.

I love the look of the seagrass and jute, but for us, it wouldn't work because of animals and barefeet, and possibly grandchildren in the future.

Try looking on Houszz.com for some ideas!

As for us, I think we may end up with hardwood steps and tiled risers. But I'm still looking, too.

A good quality carpet store should be able to do just about anything you want.

Good luck with your project!

Natural fiber is not as great as you think, its very susceptible for any weather, it tends to mold easy. I would use a good nylon short nap inside and poly outside.
