No, banning alcohol on the beach is not going to stop drunk drivers from killing people. Do we just ban alcohol everywhere? Myself I don't drink on the beach but people who drink responsibly shouldn't have to pay the price.

No.

Using this type of reasoning, if someone drowns at that beach, they should ban swimming.

This is a stupid idea.

What a knee jerk reaction.

Before I could vote either yes or no - I would need to see crime/arrest/complaint statistics at Siesta Key Beach - in order to get a feel of how much a problem alcohol really is (or isn't) causing there. If this was truly an isolated incident then I'd probably vote no.

However my gut feeling is that the beach is a "family" area and children are there - so in general without even knowing any of the statistics - my gut instinct tells me the best solution would be to probably ban alcohol.

There are other problems besides just drunk driving that can occur. And at least at a bar this is a place where adults congregate (and not families with children).

Going a step further in general I am liberal minded about things. Such as this recent news story about Sarasota requiring adult dancers to wear a g-string and pasties:

Strippers at Cheetah Lounge cannot perform totally nude, judge says | HeraldTribune.com

Now come on! Sarasota doesn't have better things to spend time on then numerous hearings, trials, lawyers, meetings, expenses all to be "big brother" to a group of ADULT patrons at an establishment. Who gives a rat's a** if people are totally naked at these places??? If you don't like it then don't go there! Simple enough.

IMO it's all about the all mighty dollar. 1) removing alcohol from Siesta Key Beach is perceived by the commissioners as something that would hurt tourism (and revenues). 2) allowing dancers to be "totally nude" at an adult club would 'supposedly' hurt property values.
