While not exactly an Epicurian pursuit, there are times when a plate of wings is just what the doctor ordered. I have been none-too-impressed by the Buffalo Wild Wings on Clark, and have had numerous other moderate to extreme failures as well.

While I do not generally prefer the "sports bar" type of establishment, somehow we stumbled into Gator Tails on Tamiami (near J. Ryan's) yesterday.

Everything was at least pretty good for bar food (I had a solid French dip, and the fries were good), but the "suicidal wings" I ordered (Tuesday all day special: .39 per wing!) were VERY good. I ordered them lightly breaded, and they came out nice and crunchy, but really juicy inside, and the sauce was sufficiently spicy without being absurd.

They have something like ten other sauce options as well.

I am determined to find at least one example of great food in every genre, dammit.

i've only had wings here at Sarasota brewing Co in Gulf Gate...good beer! I would never order suicidally hot wings though OUCH lol I make wings at home so I usually just do that when we are in the mood.

Excited to report I just had lunch from NY Chinese and was perfectly satisfied. I held out almost 2 years without even trying Chinese food here because of the lousy rep it has in FL but I'll go back again. I only get in the mood every few months so it's not that big a'deal.

I don't think I would go to a Gator Tails or Bogey's type place though

Yeah, that's a little funny to me as well.

I looked at the waitress and said "Lightly breaded? That sounds odd to me."

And she said "Yeah, I know what you mean. But most really good wings are actually lightly breaded. They just don't describe them that way. A touch of breading is what gives them the crunch."

She was right, I must admit.

Not a fan of Buffalo Wild Wings. Too chainy for me.

I'm always on the hunt for good wings.

Had lunch at Mrs. Chens the other day and it was a decent buffet.

Agreed but I cannot figure out why they don't have crab rangoon! They do have excellent egg drop soup, IMO.

I've had good wings at Bogey's & Pop's in Nokomis. We've been to Gator Tails a couple of times & have enjoyed the food.
