We are relocating to Sarasota area, from MA (yes, we are Snowbirds, Yankees) because we have imediate family who lives in Sarasota/Bradenton.

I guess I have a few questions/concerns...One is I am doing lots of research, and finding it difficult to find a rental HOME with 2+ acres, with at least a 1stall barn on it, for my horse, that is fenced. All the properties are HUGE facilities. I just want a 3bed,2 bath home (no mobile home) with a safe environment for my horse, to hang out and be ridden.

The boarding facilities are very expensive, and do not offer what I need or what I am looking for for my horse. I am very weary about leaving my horse with someone who I don't know.

The hay and shaving prices are EXTREMELY expensive! I pay $4.50 a bail, for hay, and a bail, for pine shavings! In FL, it is $12-15, for a bail of hay and shavings! Why is that? Is hay really ungrowable, in Florida? Shavings, too. People, really have to get them from Canada and PA????

We already have a school, in mind, for our kids-the same school my neice goes to. I am just having trouble finding a home, near the school zone.

I know Myakka City is very horsey...how far is that away from Sarasota?

Any advice?

Myakka City is inland, about 45 minutes drive from Sarasota.

I will tell you that what you are looking for is VERY difficult to find anywhere in Sarasota, I don't even think it exists. Hard enough to find a home with 2 acres for rent, let alone with a barn where you can keep a horse.

You could also check into eastern Manatee County or the Parrish area, those are still fairly close to Sarasota and a bit more rural feeling. You would have the best luck looking north of Tampa where it really becomes much more rural with agricultural areas. Regarding hay, I used to live in Dade City (35 mi. north of Tampa) and saw many hayfields there at one time.

Good luck to you!

I ran a search for rentals in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto counties that allow horses. There was only one listing and it is a mobile home.

MLS# M5833874 $1,350 per month. HORSES WELCOME on this "hard-to-find" property in a great COUNTRY SETTING east of Parrish. Deluxe Manufactured Home situated on 5.27 fenced acres with State Road frontage, a four-stall pole barn and room to roam. This exceptional "Homes of Merit" manufactured home has all the bells and whistles including a wood-burning FIREPLACE, front porch and huge back deck. The interior features a great "chef's" kitchen and breakfast bar and an indoor laundry. The Master Suite has a walk-in closet and garden tub. And, best of all, NO DEED RESTRICTIONS. Has horse stables, fenced acreage, four-stall pole barn, turnout paddock and pasture.

Thank you both!
I looked into thatrental, in Parrish. Eh.....Can I contact you for help finding a rental? I think I am going to board my horse, and just stay in the Lakewood area. That's where my family is. I am going to look into Dade City, too, at the hay, just for giggles.
