I'm a single, early-50s northeasterner looking to relocate to the west coast of Florida. I'd like to settle into a community with a great tennis scene, preferably in a nice-but-not-extravagant townhouse or maintenance-free villa. I assume communities like Lakewood Ranch etc. are great for families, and places like Palmer Ranch are great for the over 75 crowd. Anything in between with a vibrant tennis scene? Appreciate any suggestions!

First, I think you will find that there is a healthy demographic mix in both Lakewood Ranch and Palmer Ranch; it's not as clearly defined as you may think. For tennis, Lakewood Ranch certainly does offer a pretty good tennis program. You can see the website at: Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club*Pool, Tennis & Fitness

I know Rosedale also has an active tennis program as does Cascades. El Conquistador, Meadows, and Palm Aire also come to mind. I've heard the River Strand has an active program, too. I'm not a player so this is all based on what I've heard from those who do.

It depends how serious you are and what level you've been playing.
Bath and Racquet would be the best overall...most players....different levels.

As a lifelong tennis player, I've always considered the east coast to be more tennis centric; Boca, Palm Beach, etc.

My husband is a serious player and really enjoys The Meadows Country Club. It has 17 har-tru courts, an active membership, 3 pros and very attractive surroundings. It has a very low key friendly tone to the membership. When we first bought here, he was very pleased that the pros hooked him up with a nice group of players. Right now the club has excellent rates for those joining who are under 59. I believe it's called "Executive Memberships"
