I am an artist who does large scale abstracts and looking for a connection to a Sarasota interior designer. I prefer not selling to public directly. I live south of Sarasota but am there fairly often and my work has been sold there by galleries.

Any suggestions appreciated, both good and bad since I've heard in other areas about artists not being paid after they completed commissioned work (meaning not likely to be able to sell to anyone else it due to customization).

if you doon't get a good 50% deposit on commissions, you're headed for disaster

Wow thanks for your insight. I'm not naive about interior designers having a vested interest and getting referral money (aka kickbacks) from others in the industry, happens in a lot of venues although I never got any or gave any. I saw this happen in an HOA we lived in in Naples, the manager always gave the bid to "his" contractors for painting, landscaping , etc. Reason=he was getting free stuff and/money from them as a commission. Big money.

But knowing who is fair and honest dealing with their suppliers is what I am looking for. Probably hard to get this information except by word of mouth and I'm not connected that way.

I will follow up on the architect idea, they would be familiar with people they like to work with.

I'm not a newbie and agree completely about 50% up front and an iron clad contract. But it helps to be working with ethical people right from the beginning. Business people can be good or bad to deal with, just trying to skip the bad ones.
