I am looking for advice for a young family looking to move to Venice. I have a 7, 9, and 11 year old. We are actually from MD, but have been living in Carlsbad, CA. Carlsbad has been great for the kids with lots of sports, excellent schools, and every outdoor activity you can imagine. We are leaving do to the governor here continuing to keep everything locked down. Kids still have no school or sports. He even closed the beaches and parks for months. Carlsbad is conservative unlike most of CA. I don't like the direction things are going here.

I am not worried about the humidity, but need advice in helping to pick the best area. My research shows me that the schools are amazing in Venice. How are the people? Looking to avoid the spoiled, entitled, keep up with the Jones type areas. There is some of that where I am now, but for the most part its great families and kids with good morals and values.

We are also looking at Jupiter, Naples, and Ponte Vedra Beach. I am also open to other recommendations if someone has one. If any one has advice on any of the above it would really be appreciated. We are really looking for this to be our last move and want to put our children in the best possible environment around the best like minded people. Thank you so much.

I'm older and have no kids but I do live in Venice and have been told by younger residents that Venice has excellent schools. Sarasota County is one of the really good counties in Florida and the schools are known to be above average. I have a friend who has two grade school age kids and they are currently going to school utilizing an online system due to covid. I believe some of the kids are actually attending classes here in Venice. I think it is optional but perhaps someone else can chime in here and verify that.

People in Venice are nice. The area is growing rapidly and even though it has been primarily a retirement area I think the demographic is trending somewhat younger. My neighborhood has a mixture of younger and older families. We have several school age children here.

I don't see Venice as a keep up with the Joneses type of place. People come here from all over. Lots of Snowbirds here in the winter and they tend to come from New York, New Jersey and many from the Midwest as well. Normally, we get lots of Canadians here but there may not be as many this winter due to Covid.

There seems to be a lot of Californians moving to Florida. I imagine the cost of living would be much better for you here than in Carlsbad. Florida population, especially coastal, is increasing rapidly so that will eventually increase the cost of living here especially with housing.

If you scroll through some of the old threads or do a search on Venice I'm sure you will find the area discussed quite a bit. Good luck to you!

Thank you for the reply. Really appreciate it. The ocean is definitely much more usable than Carlsbad's and I hear the water is crystal blue. Lots of people are leaving CA. I think more from the insane lockdowns. Unfortunately I think it will only get worse here. How crowded is Venice most of the year?

In the winter season Venice can get a bit congested especially on Venice island but in the summer months the traffic is much less and its actually kind of slow here then. People coming here from a major city would think that this area is a piece of cake though.

This is a very nice area and if you can handle the humidity in the summer months I think you would like it here. I've been here almost 8 years and I've rarely met anyone who didn't like it here.

That link should give you some info on the various schools in Venice.

Jupiter has become extremely built up.

Naples is for retirees. Do NOT move there if you have children. Seriously.

Don't know about Ponte Verde.

SWFL has a Midwestern vibe. People who live here year round are generally polite and friendly, it's definitely not a keep up with the Jones situation.

SoFL has a NY/NJ vibe and a keep up with the Jones vibe.

And that why us natives in SWFL, don't want the area to devolve into that NY/NJ vibe or population

The areas you have in mind in Florida swing high on an elder population and lack city amenities nearby. If you are looking for a slower paced life for you and the kids. Jupiter I would say is the best bet for access to activities for the kids.

This sounds perfect. Thank you! Heading to Venice this week. Anywhere else worth checking out that would be good for kids?
