Hello, I might be in the market for a new roof after the insurance company threatened to suspend my insurance due to a 16yr old roof. Can I get some feedback as to who is a good reputable roofing contractor and who to avoid? Thank, Jeff

When we put a new roof on our home 2 years ago, we ended up starting by selecting the type of shingles first. Why the shingles? Because a number of nearby neighboring homes had replaced roofs in the previous 2 - 4 years and a majority of them were now showing mildew on the roofs (some quite noticeable). Most of those roofs had been installed by a handful of area roofers, using popular brands of Home Depot / Lowes shingles.

After doing a lot of research, I found out that many of the asphalt shingles sold today contain limestone granules as fillers, and those granules encourage the growth of algae, which usually shows up as black "mold" on roofs.

So we ended up going with an algae resistant shingle by GAF, mainly because of the warranty.

And we went with a GAF certified roofer:

I've noticed that Home Depot now carries algae resistant shingles in stock, so it appears home owners are catching on to the algae issues.

If you wish to know which of the certified GAF roofers we used, you can send me a direct message. We were very happy with the company and the results.

We used Yoder roofers three years ago. So far, so good.
Didn't know about Algae and went with the samples they offered.
They were very nice and fast. Came with a huge crew. Finished from beginning to end in 3 days.

That is good to know—
We have tile roofs in our subdivision with the back porches often having asphalt shingles because they connect to the screened lanai
