My wife and I bought a house in North Port in July 2008. Our daughter and her family will be living there for the next couple years until we retire and move down ourselves. We feel very fortunate to have found a very new home (2007) in a quiet area on a greenbelt for a ridiculously small amount of money. The same house here in Anchorage would sell for over $300K. I have recently found this forum and thought I would say hello and that I look forward to reading and participating in the discussions. We would welcome any advice or recommendations regarding our new community. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the area. That's quite a difference in climate-Alaska to Florida! I'm sure you'll love North Port. We certainly do

Thanks for the welcome. The difference in climate is primarily what we were looking for SoFlGal. We've lived in Alaska for the past 22 years and are tired of the long dark winters. Sunshine and beaches seem like heaven to us. We both grew up in SW Arizona, so the Florida heat won't be a problem. We can adjust to the humidity I'm sure. The house we bought is just the right size for us to be quite happy. I've got some contractors making modifications to the house now and we plan to put in a swimming pool after we moved down. We will both be retired, so no need to find employment. We've been looking at the Port Charlotte/North Port area since Feb 2007 and really love the area.

You should be able to get a pretty good price on having a pool built. There are many companies looking for work due to the slow down in building. The homes are inexpensive enough in North Port that you can often get a great price and then have money left over for upgrades.

That's great that you both will be retired, jobs aren't as plentiful as they were several years ago.

I hear Alaska is a beautiful place to visit. I hope to visit in the next couple of years. I've never seen snow (SW Florida native) so that might be a bit of a shock! I've traveled quite a lot, it's just always been in the summertime.

Since you are new to the area, please let me know if I can help you find anything. I'm pretty familiar with the stores, beaches, etc.

Welcome to North Port. My son is a salmon fisherman and bush pilot in Homer, a small but wonderful community. He's taken us on flights to visit some very remote Alaskan towns. We were surprised at land and condo prices in Alaska. And we were impressed by the extremely bright and friendly people we have met. Welcome to North Port. We believe you've chosen well. As is the case with SoFLGal, my wife and I are prepared to assist you if we can.
