Hi everyone! My husband is considering taking a job with a government subcontractor and his office would most likely be in Brandon. We live in NJ now and both grew up here. For anyone familiar with NJ - we live at the "shore" - we are one town in from Belmar and my kids and I spend alot of time at the beach. It takes me less than 10 minutes to go from my driveway to the boardwalk in Belmar. Sooooooo I guess you can figure out that we want to be close to the beach - now realistically I'm not expecting to be 10 minutes but I don't want to be an hour or even 45 minutes.

Originally when this first was mentioned I thought his office was going to be right outside of MacDill and we were very interested in the Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor area. Then there was another office spot in the talks and we were thinking more towards Sarasota. OK - so now it looks like Brandon is it and when I look at it on google maps it looks pretty even between Brandon and Sarasota and Brandon and the Dunedin area. I have no idea how the traffic runs but I have read on these boards that it is horrific! Which would be a better commute for my husband - and yes I know that it is going to be a long one. I'm sure I will have alot more questions as things move along but this is the big one right now. Thanks!

Karen

Free bump!

Just wanted to say hi to another person from NJ who will more than likely be down in FL as well. I'm trying to learn as much from this forum as I can for now!

I drive from Sarasota to Brandon/ Riverview for work. The drive takes about 45 minutes but it's one of the easiest drives. Population through the area is not what it is in Tampa or Sarasota. I had to convince myself to make that commitment of a drive but it's been well worth it with Sarasota, beaches, arts, etc. vs. Tampa (will leave that alone for another day). Just have a reliable car that is good on gas and you should be all set. If your from New Jersey this should be a cake walk of a drive.

Thanks Sugarat! That is what I was hoping to hear! The Sarasota area has always been my first choice but I was worried about the commute! What part of Sarasota are you in? I would really like to be in the North Port area or Palmer Ranch but they look to be in the southern part of Sarasota. Schools are also important as I will have one in high school and one in middle school. But again from reading the boards it sounds like most of Sarasota County schools are highly rated.

I live off University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge. It's a quite, safe area and the schools are rated very well. North Port is a drive and a half and would not recommend it for driving to Tampa. I honestly would live too much farther south that where we are just because of the drive. If the drive were to get longer I would start to really despise it. Luckily it's an easy one from this distance. The distance from University to Clark Rd is just about 8 highway miles. If you can get something close to the highway on any of those you should be o.k. I do leave early in the morning so that is a benefit also. I'm not sure what time your commute would be but you may want to keep that in mind as well. I wish you luck in your search. Sarasota is great and should be one of the first places to recover in this recession (in my own opinion). It has always been a desirable place to live ever since it broke away from Manatee county over not spending the taxes to improve Sarasota.
