It's your choice but I would advice you to do the drive a couple of times and decide for yourself.
You've probably been able to choose the commute time that is most convenient for you and not had to make the drive with everyone else who is going to/leaving work. If the OP is coming fom Wilmington at rush hour there's a fair likelihood of sitting in traffic on President St. as it approaches downtown. And you're right about the two-lane roads in SC. Not to mention frequent accidents with only one alternate route around. If you actually have to get on HHI, the traffic is worse than anywhere on the route. The outlet mall is not even on HHI. Of course, due to the so called prestige of the name, everything from the island west to Hardeeville is often referred to as Hilton Head.

I think if you do those eight miles at night you will be convinced ....oh no, not for me.

I'm also not necessarily stuck on Wilmington Island. Also, considering Pooler, Port Wentworth, Garden City, Rincon, South Effingham.

I've heard two views on some of those areas. Someone here replied those areas are all basically uber white bible thumper type areas. I have a friend who used to live in Sav, and said all those areas are pretty diversified, except Rincon and South Eff he didn't know about.

I won't be actually driving onto HHI, my office will be in Bluffton.

Get an apartment in Wilmington and try the commute for a few months. It might not be that bad to you. The big problems are having to cross downtown and having to get on the road leading to bridge.

I would avoid Tybee because parts of the year the road floods so you can't get in or out at certain times, but if Wilmington isn't too bad for you you could give it a shot for a few months until finding a place to call home.

Yeah I ruled out Tybee. It would just be too crazy, I've been down there and seen people get stranded on the Island for hours because of an accident or crowds.

One thing, I expect my hours are going to start pretty early, probably hitting the road about 6am, and leaving after 6pm, so I'm hoping I would be avoiding the rush hour traffic through downtown.

Here is some fairly objective data about where more and less conservative voters live in our area. Thought the info for SC is quite telling. 2008 Presidential Election Results – County by County Map « Phil Hardwick – From the Ground Up

Thanks for the link. I'm actually suprised how 'blue' South Carolina is! Everybody seems to be telling me to live in Bluffton, but one of the things that scares me off about S.C. is how it just seems so hardcore religious-right backwoods. But maybe it isn't quite that bad...??

That was really funny about what you said about Rick Santorum...The Savannah area primary went heavily for Romney. Didnt check the election results for Bluffton, though it might be interesting to see. Sad thing is both states preferred Gingrich.

Regardless where you choose to live in our area, these people will be your neighbors, co-workers, and in some cases, your friends.

Yeah I really don't want to insult anyone...I don't think the entire Savannah area is some hardcore backwoods bible-thumping hellfire the world is coming to an end because Obama the socialist, nazi, muslim is President, and Rick will save us with Jesus, type people.

But it just does concern me about the outlying areas. Mainly because I live in a far out area of Atlanta now, and have lived here for a long time, and the people are like that. You literally cannot just go hang out and have a few drinks with a neighbor w/o the stuff coming up. The minute you say Obama is anything less than some taliban, socialist, nazi implant here to destroy America single handedly, then you are never talking to those people again and they won't even let their kids play with yours anymore.

Just do not want to end up in another area like this. Rincon, Pooler, and Bluffton S.C., seem like decent areas, but just a little concerned if they are hardcore religious-right type of areas. I have heard opinions on both sides..So it gets very confusing as to what to believe!

If you believe Rick Santorum would be a great President and support banning porn, contraception, homosexuals are the epitomy of all evil in the world, etc., more power to you. I don't mean to insult you, I just don't want to live ANYWHERE near people like you...LOL
