Sides argue impact of planned downtown hotels on proposed convention center hotel
Quote:
Downtown Savannah’s hotel boom is about to resume and could doom prospects for a convention center headquarters hotel on Hutchinson Island.
Plans for three new hotels that will add approximately 375 rooms to the historic district have either been approved or are in the review stage with the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission.

Seems to me that the continued health of the existing hotels is dependant on Savannah having just a few less hotel rooms that they can fill on St Patrick's Day week. Why have more hotels that are empty most of the time?

Actually, a lot of downtown's hotels are doing quite well and not just on St. Patrick's Day.

Oh, yes, I didn't mean they were not. I'm just saying that we don't want to have too many hotels. What I forsee is that some of the smaller, older ones will not be able to sustain.

I'm also worried about how many hotels they can continue to build before the market is saturated. So far, we're not there, but if we keep building hotel after hotel, it'll come.. at some point... unless we can come up with more reasons for tourists to visit.

I can't see that we need hotels as such, but a hotel/convention center might lure more conventions to the city.
