Hi,
My husband been offered a permanent job in Savannah and Im looking for advice/info on the area before we make our minds up. I have 2 children, 2 & 4 yrs, and do not plan to work for a while (Im a hairdress and unsure how easy it is to find jobs!). Please could you advise if 67k is a good wage for the area for a family of 4 & also if a British family would fit in and is there lots to do with the kids? Im a keen running and love attending the gym. Last question is, are the pre/primary schools as good as there reputations say around the Effinham and Richmond Hill area.
Thank you.

People in Savannah love British people. Americans love them. In fact you'll have to change your accent in order to prevent strangers from talking to you and asking you odd questions.

67k is not a bad salary, but eventually you'll need to work, too. A couple needs to make around 100k a year around here to live an average middle class life, especially if you have children.

Why Effingham? That's pretty far out / rural and a tad "uncultured" IMO. Savannah has quite a large population of Brits and decidedly more people with British sensibilities (several pubs, rugby clubs, social and civic groups, etc) as well as comfortable neighborhoods and good schools. I think you'll love the Historic Dicstrict and the colonial history of Old Savannah!

Effingham does have good schools however the traffic commuting to Savannah on Highway 21 is terrible because of a lot of people moving out of Savannah because of the higher taxes now commute. Of course the traffic is bad every where. I would suggest the Pooler area to consider as an alternative to Effingham. But with 67k you might be better able to afford to live in Effingham. As newsboy stated "That's pretty far out / rural and a tad "uncultured".

A lot will depend on where your husband will be working. If he will be in the western part of Chatham County, then, Effingham is a good place to start until you know the area better. The traffic flow will be much better for him.

Picking the wrong side of the area can easily add 30 minutes or more to his commute each day.

Thank you for the information. Sadly we are turning the job down as the wage we feel will make us struggle with me looking after 2 young children. Such a shame :-(
