Just a simple question as I seem to misunderstand what an "affair" is.

The SMN refers to Person #1 having numerous "Affairs" with Person #2.

My question.... How can you have more than one affair with the same person??

I saw that and also thought an editor at a "real" paper would have caught that. I think they meant numerous "encounters" with #2, but we the readers should not have to sit back trying to figure out what a writer really meant.

Unless of course they meant black-tie affairs with catered meals, a string quartet, perhaps a silent auction for charity...in which case that's a whole other story.

Sigh ... Ive already sent one email to SMN editor Susan Catron this week complaining about newsroom incompetence; do I now have to send another? BTW, she replied with a very apologetic "you're right, we screwed up" missive, that was full of lots of "we just don't have the staff or man hours anymore to do what we'd like to do." That's no excuse for stupidity!

I recommend voicing your opinion to her directly, if you feel that strongly. They need to know that people are reading the paper and won't stand for this laziness.

I just laughed. The whole situation is sordid and pathetic.

"we just don't have the staff or man hours anymore to do what we'd like to do."

Like hit grammar-check once in a while. Or read something more than once before hitting the send button. So, so expensive. :-/

I guess we should be grateful that she actually acknowledges errors. So many online news providers publish stories with much more heinous spelling, and/or grammatical errors and they do nothing to correct them, even when the results are virtually incomprehensible. Seventh graders could take a red pen to some of the stuff on yahoo news.

Seventh graders write most of the stuff on Yahoo News!

And don't get me started on Yahoo Answers!

Editorial correction:
Person #1 banged Person #2 several times like a screen door in a hurricane.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

It took me a while to stumble back across an article with the awkward " multiple affair" phrase.

http://www.wsav.com/story/23593954/m...arassment-case

It is more likely a mishandled quote from someone involved in the situation than an overt mistake on the part of any of the journalists.

It is sad, in this day and age, that some people in authority probably weren't the best students in their English classes. We can only hope they are authentically qualified for the positions they hold because they are superior in other ways.

I think the only error here was in the headline not having the word "affair/s" in quotes. The news is quoting the husband not creating the headline.
My statement is clear as mud ...right?

Alright, I read further. The "affair numerous times" quote comes directly from the written statement by Laprentice Mayes. See page 3, halfway down.

Documents Obtained by WSAV News 3

The allegations in the statement are quite sickening. We can only suppose they contained enough truth for the Chief to quickly retire. Yikes.
