And, to separate companies... I wonder what this means for the news department at WJCL? I bet those guys are wondering the same thing. Perhaps they'll strike a deal to share facilities and people, but if they don't, maybe it will mean a whole new news department and TV station facility will spring up...

I wish the big news stations like TOC and SAV would invest in a traffic copter. I'm sure quite a few locals would agree traffic is bad enough.

I wonder how expensive it is?

For a market of this size... WAY too expensive. You're talking about $650/hr. for the blade time, a heavy investment in the machine itself in the first place, and outfitting it with cameras and live-link capabilities inside and out.

Not to mention the human resource costs of maintenance, operation and sticking a traffic guy or gal in the thing.... There's no way on earth that will ever happen here. Ever.

What is the threshold for having equipment like that population-wise? Would it be for a city the size of Jacksonville? Charlotte?

I never really considered it profitable either way, but something of a necessity for places like Atlanta where WSB-TV has a copter.

Well, Raleigh used to have one, but I don't think it flies much anymore. Operating costs are too high, and internet traffic cameras are everywhere, largely replacing the need for one in the first place. If we ever needed monitoring of traffic beyond what Google Maps offers from real-time social data collection (and I don't think we really do), you can count on the terrestrial and web-connected variety taking their place anyway.

Savannah is market #96 (or thereabouts). RDU is #27ish. So, you can see we're not even in their same league, and they've pretty much done away with theirs.

Does anybody besides WSB still have a copter in ATL?

GDOT is so far behind in upgrading the Savannah area's highways though. THIS is what really needs to happen, but who knows when it will really happen? A traffic center is also needed... for things like real time signal changing during rush hour, etc..

By 2009, WXIA had done away with theirs, and entered an agreement with WAGA (Fox 5) to share theirs. Not sure how that agreement has held up through 2014, though...

I agree with you. GDOT needs to do a better job period of upgrading the infrastructure outside of Metro Atlanta. Savannah, Augusta and Macon's transportation networks are wholly inadequate for the amount of traffic they handle. GDOT needs to look to look at North Carolina and Florida and see some of the huge investments they have made in improving their transportation networks.
