Even though Augusta is GA's 2nd largest metro, Savannah is the 2nd most well known city in GA outside of Atlanta due to its tourism and being on the coast. What's holding Savannah back is its size. I feel that Savannah's metro population should be bigger than what it is. Savannah's metro should at least be the size of Charleston's metro. What's holding Savannah back from achieving growth and when do you think Savannah will reach at least 600,000 in its metro?

It's a common misconception among many people to ASSume that their view point on the subject matter is the one and only that should prevail. This is a perfect example. We should be bigger... Like ,he assumes we want to be bigger. Like, we want a change. Like , he has come to a revelation of what our city is lacking.

I'm pretty sure we're growing about as fast as we can sustain, especially in the city limits proper. Since 2000, that rate has been 19.17%. That seems like something other than being held back from achieving growth.

Both of these topics -- that Savannah is better known than Augusta and why isn't it more like Charleston -- have been discussed and discussed and discussed and discussed and discussed ... on THIS very web site. Just Google it.

ALSO: About 20 years ago, this guy from New York came down and wrote a book on the subject of why Savannah is the way it is. It was No. 1 on the New York Times Best-seller list ... FOR FOUR YEARS.

As the OP missed a few episodes of the countless threads on metro Savannah, here's the summary: (1) Savannah is now growing faster, in percentage terms, than all other GA metros except perhaps Gainesville; (2) Savannah went through a negative-growth (bust) cycle between 1960 and 1980, and few other Sunbelt cities did; (3) the metro population will pass 400,000 by the 2020 Census; (4) many Savannahians don't want Savannah to grow at all -- that's part of Savannah's unique DNA; and CoastalGuy added a good (5): Savannah's urban growth must be sustainable or its Q of A goes south; its topography of a compact downtown, nearby wetlands, floodplains, interrupted suburban corridors, and transportation/traffic issues make sustainability even more crucial during the current boom.

Take comfort, gibs. Size isn't everything. It's how you use it.

Savannah's doing just fine. It will grow fast enough. I hope it still remains the same way though. She has waaaayyy too much southern culture and history that needs to be preserved and not sacrificed for quick commercial growth. In time, I believe she will have both. jmo
