Do you have an insurance agent who actually values your business and pretends to care? If so, please refer.

When we moved from Ohio we transferred our 30 year State Farm account (homeowners and auto) to an agent in Pooler. We never saw him, and after we found out we had gone 3 months without car insurance, because "they didn't have our phone number" which was in the phone book, we switched to another company.

Now, our present agent still has made no effort to meet with us or otherwise acknowledge us. We were even at the same civic group meeting with him, and nothing. We are pissed at this company now because we have had to do our own digging to find out how to cut our premium. We feel it should be a relationship in which an agent is monitoring his customers, instead of phoning it in.

Is this a southern thing? I've run into this same problem in other facets of southern business. In the past, our agent arranged an annual meeting to make sure no important information had changed. This was for his benefit as well as ours.

Unfortunately, in this day and age of Internet business, smart phone apps and automatic payments/debits, the insurance man as your friend is rare and hard to come by.

We aren't eligible for USAA, and we have Country Financial now. We will just need to me more pro active, I guess.

I did have country financial for both as the home/auto discount made the total cheaper than auto for USAA. They kept going up and eventually I just moved them to USAA auto as it saved about $400 per year. They never did adjust the home owners.

We have Statefarm here in MD and plan to switch it over when we move via our existing agent. I hope we don't encounter the same problems you did! I've had the same agent here for 28 years and have had nothing but smooth sailing the few times I've needed to utilize our benefits.

Thanks for your post - when our time comes we will for sure be staying on top of the new agent to make sure the transition goes smoothly.

Yes, do that. In our town there are about 3-4 State Farm Agents. We should have met with all of them and chosen the one we felt comfortable with, instead of just throwing a dart.

I reside in Atlanta and State Farm, whom I had used for years and years, suddenly doubled my auto insurance. We parted company. I now use AmericanFamily. I have never had a claim, but I'm still paying through the snoot.

I bet you would get socked in Atlanta, especially for auto.

Even without our State Farm fiasco, we might have switched by now anyway because of cost. We are actually pretty happy with Country Financial, since we had a large homeowners claim, and they handled it very well, and did not jack up our premium at all.
The older I get, the more my illusions are shattered in so many ways, so I just need to adjust my thinking and stay on top of things, instead of relying on professionals to care about their work. Last week, we took delivery on a new car. This week, we have had it in the shop for the same thing 2x. Nobody cares about doing a good job anymore.

Well, as far as the auto insurance goes, I believe we have more uninsured motorists here in the South, esp. in Atlanta. You can pretty much tell who has it and who doesn't. We are paying for that. I can't remember which company it was, Prudential?, who just stopped writing auto coverage in Georgia. That was back in the early 80s. I did have my sights on a Savannah area retirement, but I'm actually thinking about moving back up North. My retirement savings would certainly go a lot further. Please don't think I'm dissing the South, I'm speaking merely on what one can get for the $$$.

I agree with you about "nobody cares...". A couple of years ago, I don't know if I would have agreed with that. However, I am finding that in order to purchase a pair of pants that will last a year now cost me $100. I must admit they are very fine pants.
