I know that Johnson HS. is just awful and the adninistration is lacking. Kids do pretty much what they want.

Depends on the school. Best is Savannah Arts which is a nationally ranked high school sending kids to premier colleges like the Air Force Academy "I know one girl going there this year" to Princeton and Harvard. Other high schools like Johnson have a direct pipeline to the Ga. Penn.

On the other hand, I went to Jenkins, an inner-city high school with an engineering magnet. I went to Georgia Tech after graduating and now work as a Civil Engineer in Atlanta for a major retailer.

It is what you make of it. I received terrific support from my guidance counselors at Jenkins and had a wonderful network of teachers and administration. Granted this was 10 years ago, but nevertheless it was a good experience. I've never been one to believe that I'm entitled to someone showering me with attention, so maybe that's the difference.

You have to seek support and be willing to learn. That can't be taught at school. That comes from home.

Johnson used to be pretty good before Islands opened.

I left there right before Islands opened up.

Savannah Arts has close to a 100% graduation rate with the top 1/3 of the students going to a ranked university. Yes you do have to apply, you need a 3.0 GPA and pass an arts audition. Some of the arts programs are harder to get into than others.

The good schools website is not the end all be all of how to make a determination but Savannah's results on there are abysmal (2's and 3's on a 1-10 scale).

Hopefully once they get the crime under control (which I believe they will) they can turn their focus to the schools.

Only a 3.0 cumulative GPA? That's far more lenient than I thought it would be to enter the Arts Academy. I read in the Morning News last year that most high school kids in Georgia have a solid B average now. Must be grade inflation, as those Chatham honor rolls are also 3 and 4 times as long as they were for us "back in the day." I suspect that a B in 2016 would be a C-minus 40 years ago.
