Port of Savannah lands $44M federal grant (Lawrenceville, Garden City: house, transfer)

The Port of Savannah has received a $44 million federal grant for a project aimed at bringing rail switching activities inside its property.

The work will involve reconfiguring the Garden City Terminal’s on-dock container transfer facilities.The project is a good example of priorities Congress set with the passage late last year of a five-year, $305 billion transportation funding bill. The legislation was aimed at prioritizing those projects most critical to the nation’s safety and economic success, said U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall, R-Lawrenceville, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“The Port of Savannah is one of the busiest ports in the country, which makes it the perfect candidate for what this program is intended to do: steer transportation dollars toward projects that matter most to America,” Woodall said. “This is exactly the kind of nationally significant project that will benefit Georgia families and our nation’s economy.”
