I don't know why, perhaps because I don't spend enough time exploring, but this week I took the time and drove a new area for me. This is an area about two blocks off the Savannah Golf Club. Named streets such as Kinzie, Lawton, Forrest, Goebel. For the most part smaller homes but some going up to about 2000 sqf. Manicured lawns, clean, and a fair share mix of white, black and Latino.

Once you think you know this city it's wise to get up and about and get out of the districts or the south side and see where other people live.

I was inspired to post this after reading the post about a man that wants to get out and talk to real people..or something like that and get to really know Savannah in 5 days on a mountain bike. Good luck with that. My visit to that area took over six years for me to get to. Lol

The area you discovered is called Gordonston, one of the city's officially designated Historic Districts and one of its most desirable neighborhoods. Yes, Savannah DOES surprise -- which is why I get so upset when visitors never venture outside the Historic District and end up leaving thinking Savannah is nothing but the downtown surrounded by blight and ghettos. There are millions of visitors to this city each year who never even see Victory Drive and Ardsley Park for gosh sakes! Can you imagine?!

I loved the Coffee Bluff area. Felt like I was way off the beaten path. And I couldn't hear the roar of a interstate anywhere when I was out there!

We are coming back again at the end of Sept-early October for parents weekend at SCAD. Spending a week in the area to look around and see what places to target to find a house. Springfield seemed just a little further out than I wanted when I saw a house there last weekend. Rincon seemed a little closer. Still thinking of the southern side of the area.

This time we will be bringing our camper down and staying out on Tybee. Also going to check out the modular home dealer in Pooler. Not that I want to build again as been there and done that, but it's a option if we find a small lot in a area we like.

I like exploring-you find out much more about an area that way.

See the difference for me is that when we go away, we tend to live like we do at home. As we have our camper, we go to local stores, explore the areas to see how to get around, where to not drive. I'd rather give my hard earned cash to the Mom and Pop store that's got what I need rather than say a Home Depot. I want to know where locals eat, because the pricey places are OK once in a while but I want good old stick the ribs food that is amazing from a place you'd least expect it.

Also with studying hospitality and tourism back in college I learned to go off the beaten track. There are gems to be found that "tourists miss".
