Allegiant will be offering nonstop flights from Savannah to Louisville beginning May 26th....

Savannah - Hilton Head International Airport welcomes the news. Savannah Airport Commission Executive Director Gregory Kelly credits Allegiant with enticing new visitors to southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry.

He says "Low cost airfares make it more affordable for people to visit our region."

That $44 rate if for one-way tickets only. The company says to get that price you must purchase your ticket by January 13th.

With all of these new services and expanded services coming to the airport, I hope service to Florida cities is restored. I would also like to see service to the Caribbean started and airlines like Southwest or Frontier to come to Savannah.

I'd just be happy to see better options for small airplanes (reasonable hangar rent and not getting stuck at the back of ATC's line) that don't involve driving 40-50 minutes each way.

The airport posted another record year of growth, 2.2 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 8 percent over 2015 numbers....
Quote:
Undaunted by Hurricane Matthew, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport welcomed a record number of passengers in 2016, finishing the year with nearly 2.2 million total passengers, an 8-percent increase over 2015.

The airport boarded more than 1 million passengers during the 12-month period, capping the year with a total of 1.08 million enplanements. Incoming passengers accounted for 1.1 million, bringing the total number of passengers served to 2.19 million.

“We are proud to report that 2016 was a record breaking year for this airport,” said Greg Kelly, airport executive director.

“We exceeded the previous high mark for all time enplanements by almost 50,000. The growth has been impressive and says a lot about the efforts of all those who work hard to attract people to our region,” Kelly said, adding that the numbers also speak to the business climate in the region.

“We have worked hard to bring in new air service with our partners at Visit Savannah, The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. This partnership has produced great results over this past year and the numbers reflect that.”

The airport’s record performance might have been even better had the Lowcountry not felt the fury of Hurricane Matthew in early October, said Lori Lynah, director of marketing and air service development.

“October is typically a peak travel month for Savannah’s airport,” Lynah said. “But this year our numbers were down 10 percent as Hurricane Matthew grounded flights for three days during mandatory evacuations that closed roads into the county.”

The Hilton Head-Bluffton region in South Carolina, which accounts for approximately 45 percent of Savannah’s air travelers, also took a blow from the storm, she said.

Lynah attributed much of the growth to the addition of flight options, which in 2016 included direct service from a number of Midwest markets; and United Airlines’ addition of larger planes.

In 2017, travelers will have even more options as they choose from seven different airlines – Air Canada, Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, Sun Country and United – offering nonstop service to a variety of major cities including Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Low-cost airline Allegiant added three new routes in 2016, including nonstop service to Baltimore, Lexington, Ky., and Newark Liberty International.

Delta, with 10 nonstop flights a day to Atlanta, five to New York City and one to Detroit, again claimed the lion’s share of the market at 43.7 percent.

American was next with 24.2 percent, including nine daily nonstop flights to Charlotte, two to Dallas/Fort Worth and one to Washington, D.C. American also serves Philadelphia with two weekday flights and four on Saturday and Sunday.

And with the addition of more airlines and new routes, the growth for 2017 will be even more impressive. At this rate SAV may hit 3 million by 2020 or 2021.

A new customs building is being built at the airport...
Quote:
The airport had an FIS in the early 1990s, when Key Airlines used Savannah as a hub for flights to the Caribbean and Mexico. But the FIS was in the old terminal building and, when Key ceased operations in 1993, the space was converted into offices.
The airport, in 2009 in conjunction with Gulfstream Aerospace and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, opened a new Customs office at the old airport terminal, but operations quickly outgrew that 3,400 square-foot facility. The maximum working capacity at the new 19,000 square-foot building will allow two 767 jets side by side.

The airport continues to set records. I could see the airport breaking 3 million by 2025.

Quote:
The airport recorded 264,921 travelers during April with an 18 percent increase in enplanements. So far this year, 805,697 people have traveled through the airport, which is up 10 percent compared to the same time last year.

“The airlines have increased the number of available seats 17.5 percent and the resulting increase in passengers is proof of demand. This market can definitely support additional growth,” said Lori Lynah, director of air service development with the Savannah Airport Commission.

Currently, the airport offers service to 26 destinations with 60 daily non-stop departures and several additional weekly nonstop flights and destinations offered seasonally. Most recently, Frontier launched new service to Denver and Philadelphia in May, and American and Allegiant will launch additional new routes in June.
