Well the clowncil decided to override the fairly developer-friendly MPC to approve zoning for this monstrosity that will permanently alter Forsyth Park and the neighborhood. Since they changed the entire zoning law, now it can happen anywhere in the historic Victorian area. Sad! It's another Hyatt. It could have been a great development if it was done in Savannah tradition, with a little more set back from the sidewalk and one or two less stories and a look to blend in better. Just sad.

OK ... what's the big deal? We wail on here about the need for more residential development and fewer hotels downtown, and when somebody comes along and offers to do it ... we wail again that it's somehow ruining everything. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS PEOPLE!

Because of Savannah's unique urban layout (small narrow lots) and the price of real estate, there's a fine line between what developers can make economically viable. Put simply, low-rise buildings of 2-3 floors just aren't doable from an investment standpoint. Adding 2-3 floors to an already established footprint of 2-3 floors, whether it's a hotel, condo or apartment building, doubles the potential return and marketability of the overall develepment without breaking the bank.

And I'll repeat what I've said before -- it's in the best interest of everybody, city government and residents included, to develop some of these under-performing (and unsightly) parcels downtown so that they realize their full potential and contribute more to the tax base.

There are plenty of buildings bordering Forsyth Park that already have similar height -- so stop your bellyaching. This isn't going to ruin your precious park experience!

Would you want to live next to it? We can respectfully agree to disagree. I agree with the comments of the residents that attended. most people there were not unreasonable or anti development /density. (a good thing) It's just that this developer is not making any effort to fit in. I mean News don't you think they could do better, on design? And it is way way heigher than surrounding buildings. If it is built, you will see. I am thankful that in this city, it's at least a discussion.

I'd rather live next to this than what's there now! In fact, I may even move there (though I doubt serriously I could afford it).

I have no problem with this project whatsoever. Zero. Zilch. Let them build!

Ok fair enough. I also look forward to something being built there. But an overall zoning change probably means more Hyatts and Desotos. I like Forsyth because you can see the sky around it. My main concern with this was the height, followed by the overall design and distance from sidewalk. Affordability.. What was their base rate, like $1,800 or $1,900 if I recall right? Wowsers! A bright side is the gentrification may push toward the ghetto west of Forsyth and price the criminals a few blocks farther back. Long term hardworking residents there will be pushed out which is the down side along with it, but maybe it will make Forsyth area safer overall. Trying to look at the upsides and downsides.
