I agree completely. There is a 14 story high rise 2 blocks away (609 Abercorn). The Mansion on Forsyth and the old hospital complex are also large buildings in the same area.

so they could do a stoops, a good setback, some new plants, varied texture, and make the roof of the top story set back like 20 ft or so. they H&M building on Broughton came out really nice, they way they did that. Feels like it is a full one story less tall. small changes make such a difference. Which they say in that article. Normally Savannah gets developers to be more creative and do better. will they do that on their own? doesn't look like this developer is that quality of builder. We'll see..

What is a compelling reason the city, this area, needs this building? Forget for a moment there are other buildings nearby that are as tall etc. why do we need THIS building?

I have no problem with the design of this building. It looks far better than most everything else being built downtown these days. And where do you get the idea that this builder is not "that quality?"

WE?! This is a private developer proposing to build private residences on a private piece of property. There is no collective "we" involved here. As long as the project meets city codes and ordinances and fills a market niche (which I'm sure it will, or else they wouldn't be getting financing) WE aren't impacted at all. Seriously, how will this negatively affect your life or the lives of other Savannahians? I'll wait ...

Forsyth Park is my park. Your park. Their design could be better imo. Set the top story back 30 feet or so. A few more trees. More texture on front, entrances, stoops, etc. Maybe one story shorter. Or a courtyard. Look at it from the sky. Think it blends?:

I am def for more residential and especially infill. Let's get devs to strive for excellence though. In fact, imagine they set the top story back 50 feet. And maybe a true green roof with grass, trees etc. And the few top units, had a mini park on the roof. Ummm that'd be primo primo $$/month rent. Looking to the park. Overlooks like that are what make the Mansion bar and Bohemian and Cotton so great!! (if you've been you know) Sometimes I think devs pass up good money because it simply would require thinking and effort. We used to get them to put in effort here. Like Kesslers projects. Well, we'll see. They still have one more round of Council hearings I think.

Totally agree with Pink. Actually, Savannah (like Charleston, Santa Fe, or Quebec City) has a "collective we" that's different from the one in modern downtowns like Greenville or Huntsville. Savannah has a REAL historic core, which must be protected from utilitarian low-rises (ex., this new building) just as much as from stylized turquoise high-rises in Atlanta. And "I've sure seen worse, folks" doesn't make the "collective we" feel better. The Forsyth project is an eyesore. It would better to build it in Pooler, on Mall Boulevard, or even along Butler Avenue at Tybee.

It is obvious to me that you have never lived in a planned community, one that is governed by restrictive convenants that go far beyond " meeting city code and ordinances". I'd like to suggest you take a look at the community of Forest Hill Gardens in Queens NY and see if in fact you might change your viewpoint on your response.
