The bridge is named for three-time Georgia Governor Eugene Talmadge, who is known for opposing social and political equality for everyone.

The Talmadge Bridge is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Savannah, but some say the name doesn’t represent the inclusivity of the city.
Public forum to be held on possibility of renaming the Talmadge - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort, SC, News, Weather & Sports

I'd like it to be the Flannery O'Connor Memorial Bridge (Juliette Low is OK too, while "Great Savannah" sounds like it was named by a 7th grader). Eugene Talmadge was a figure from the Jim Crow South -- worse than that, because he supported Jim Crow policies until his death. Over the next 5 years, Confederate monuments/memorials on government property will come down all across the South. After that, they'll be removed from all "public squares" (like Forsyth Park and the bridge). New Orleans is just the beginning.

I agree with you. People are just getting to damn sensitive. History has been made and can't be changed. So let's go 'forward' from here not backwards.

And if I know you, you'll be crossing it in style one day.

We know. I've read that Mercer's Moon River is either the Back River close to his childhood home near Bethesda Orphanage, or else it's the Half-Moon Creek, a tidal creek on Wilmington Island (your neck of the woods). A Savannah River bridge named after Mercer is a stretch -- and for a lyricist, he's been honored enough.
