We moved here in Feb. My husband is stationed at Ft. Stewart. We considered ourselves blessed to find a lovely home in Sunbury/Midway near the water. The house is perfect and we especially loved the screen porch! HOWEVER...we have found that we can't even enjoy our screened porch due to the biting sand gnats. We've purchased citronella candles and every thing you can imagine. Unless we bathe in OFF or Cutter, we are attacked by these bugs. We tried to go on a bike ride after soaking in OFF bug spray, but as I sit here now, I have about 50 bites all over my body and my husband is even worse. They even get us while we sleep! We ask everyone we meet and no one seems to have any answers for us, I even went to the county extension service...but to no avail! Can anyone out there offer some kind of advice? What about the itching? What besides benadryl and caladryl (cause they don't really do the job) can we apply to alleviate the itching? HELP!

Don't worry, as soon as it gets hot, they will get better. We stay indoors as much as possible this time of year. Avon Skin-So-Soft seems to work very well. The men my husband golfs with swear by Bounce Fabic Softener sheets for the dryer. They tuck them in their hat bands. I have rubbed one over my face and it does seem to help. It's funny that they don't like that odor, but are attracted by others. Sweat seems to really call to them!

Don't use perfumes or hair spray. They seem attracked by the odor. Keep the windows and doors shut. Trust me.....it will soon get better!

Default Po' thang

Over the past few years, there has been a trend in cosmetics to scent everything (even lipstick, but ESPECIALLY shampoos and lotions and soaps) to mimic fruit scents, which will cause you a lot of problems with mosquitoes, bees and gnats. Try using more scent-neutral products; this won't completely solve the problem but will go a long way toward helping. Skin-So-Soft also helps greatly. I've also heard bugs are attracted to the color black, so wearing lighter-colored clothing and shoes (which you may be doing anyway) should also help.
