Default Yes it is...very

The expansion of the Ga Ports is something to behold. The Ocean Terminal next to the bridge is surprising, since it seems that there's so little available land. But to find 144 additional acres is incredible. Of course the container port across the river on Hutchinson is a gamechanger, and sets up Savannah as the leading Atlantic port for decades to come. If the expansion of the Savannah Container Port comes to pass as planned, it will be able to handle 10.5 million TEU's, more than New York/New Jersey. It will continue the transformation of Savannah's economy. Kudos to the GPA.

Should read: "a leading Atlantic port." Let's not get carried away.

It will definitely be up there, but bragging rights over NY/NJ and all Pacific and Gulf ports? I sincerely doubt that.

It is #4 behind NY/NJ, Long Beach and Los Angeles. GPA is apparently very accommodating and easy to deal with. They have the capacity planned that will allow them to surpass the others eventually. They have the most area for expansion. The other three don't have the needed space for expansion.

GPA's already stated goal was to be able to handle 8.5 million TEU's (containers) by 2028. That is what all the dredging is for, after all. In 2018, the last year for which stats are available, Savannah handled 4.35 million and New York/New Jersey handled 7.2 million. You can read the stats here:

Top 50 World Container Ports | World Shipping Council

What I said is that if the Georgia Ports Authority can pull off their incredibly ambitious plans of opening a second container port in Savannah proper (not the Jasper port that isn't slated to break ground for at least ten years, then the overall capacity of Savannah's cargo terminals could surpass 10.5 million(actually 11 million...I miscounted this morning) containers a year. That's almost 2.5x current throughput. If that happens, then, yes, one could easily make a strong case that Savannah would become the leading port on the Atlantic coastline. Currently its #2, and it is the fastest growing port in the country. That has happened with the shallowest harbor of any major port, and with at capacity facilities. When those barriers are removed (and that is happening rapidly), the results will be transformative. It used to be that the Port of Savannah was competing with JAX and Charleston. Those days are over.

The State of Georgia is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to make this happen, and by 2030 it could easily become a reality. At the very least, the Port of Savannah will permanently solidify its position as the second leading port on the Eastern seaboard. But make no mistake, the GPA is gunning for much more. From Savannah, via rail or truck, cargo containers can reach 175 million people in 48 hours. Its all about market size and capitalizing on the opportunity before them.

I have dealt with two new large customer of the ports in the last few months. Both raved about how great an experience it was to deal with the GPA. They were willing to work with the companies and make it easier import and export for them. Said it was very different than the other larger ports they work or worked with.
