Hello, my wife and I will be visiting Savannah in early December for the first time. This is a very early scouting trip for a possible retirement location. We will be staying for a few days in a hotel by the river near the historic district. We plan to visit several restaurants and bars as well as walk around the historic district. We want to do a graveyard tour. Shopping is probably also on the agenda! We won't be renting a car, so will probably be using Uber or Lyft to get around. Any local recommendations for things to do or things to avoid? Thank you!

I recommend you take a trolley tour to get an overview of the city and a historical perspective. It’s an easy walk to the trolley departure from River St. They have a hop on and off option.

As long as you can walk a mile or two, you can cover a lot of the highlights. All the squares have historical information, and benches to pause and people watch.

You could tour Colonial Cemetery. Broughton St is torn up right now, but it’s the main shopping street.

The historic district is between the river and Forsyth Park, and MLK to E Broad St., bisected by Bull St. at the capital building with the gold dome. If you walk straight south from Bay St, you will pass many squares and shops. If you like museums, there are several...the SCAD museum and the Savannah Art Museum.

There are several brewery and distillery tours downtown. I’ve heard the prohibition museum is good, but i haven’t gone to it myself. I’ve been thinking of doing a booze theme day sometime.

The restaurants are too numerous to mention, but if you want some fancy dinners while you are here, you need to make reservations now.

Get the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, read it, then see those sights on a carriage ride. Walk/shop/dine the riverfront. See the Bird Girl Fountain area at Forsyth Park, see the Wormsloe Plantation tunnel of trees. I like to see the art and gift shop at SCAD. Ice Cream at Leopold's. I like to dine at the Pink House at least once per visit. Check out the Savannah visitor's website to see which museums and mansions are decorated for the Holiday's. A lunch/brunch Riverboat cruise might be fun. Find a rooftop bar with propane heaters to take in the view...try the sawnky "Rocks on the Roof" bar 1st, but there are others too.

Thank you both for the replies! Yep, we bought Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil! We plan to do a lot of walking around if the weather is favorable. We are thrilled that we were able to score reservations at the Olde Pink House. My wife is into Tiki cocktails, so I think we will be visiting The Bamboo Room Tiki Bar. The SCAD Museum sounds really cool as well. It seems like there is a lot to do, and our hotel is not far from many of the sights. Looking forward to our trip!
