While I disagree with your comments on an "art degree" not being practical (there are more jobs in art than any other field and very high paying jobs in art--think graphics, advertising, design, etc.) you are definitely right about the expense of SCAD and the loan repayments costing more than what you can earn from a job upon graduating for a long time. The student loan is only deferred for 3 months, and because SCAD is notorious for offering very little assistance to graduates, the loan payments start coming quick--leaving most people too strapped for cash to have enough extra money to put towards moving, job searching, and the time needed to start an entrepreneurship in their field of choice. They end up taking the first job available to be able to pay that loan payment, getting stuck in a rut for a long time. I know dozens of SCAD graduates who work at Papa Johns, Krogers, etc. And many of the graduates I know, while they may be skilled in their various talents, have absolutely no business sense, or how to sell themselves as an artist. Shouldn't business courses be a HUGE part of this really expensive degree?

Also, I agree that the city of Savannah has very little in the way of the arts. What's funny is the city leaders THINK that they are very art centered--what with all the galleries lining the city market, that makes them an artistic city right? They even have an art museum! The city is a big joke, as the politicians run it to hell, stomping out any jazz clubs, music venues, artistic centers and markets with their oppressive regulations. And you have to be 21 to see any concerts in Savannah (what little there are,) so if you like music you can forget about it. It's a town with all the problems of a larger urban area (high crime rates, horrific pollution especially in the air that the locals have gotten used to, and huge problem with abandoned pets) but run by small town folks with little sense for economics and too concerned with morality to know how to create an efficient, successful city with a stable economy and developed cultural scene--this place is not conducive to artists, artistic expression, or successful talent as a musician or artist. If you want to be successful you will have to run as fast as you can.

Also beware that the real estate agents will charge you a lot more if you tell them you're a SCAD student. A typical one bedroom apartment runs around $500-$600 in a decent neighborhood. Knowing that SCAD students are often from the north or areas where rent rates are higher, and knowing that they are picking out their first apartment on the internet with very little knowledge of the neighborhoods, they'll rent a one bedroom in the ghetto for $800/month to a SCAD student. And the SCAD student will say, "that's a good deal for an apartment in downtown! what a good deal I got!" Just letting you know....

It's not the real estate agents who will charge you more its the landlords. One of the biggest employers in the area is the U.S. government with Hunter Army Air Field and Fort Stewart. The military has a set rate it pays for a housing allowance. All of the area landlords know this and set their rents accordingly with the housing rates for the military. This has unfortunately set the market rate for all of Savannah, Richmond Hill, and Hinesville. Without dependents it starts at $990 a month. It also serves to inflate the housing values in a area also.
