Hello!

My family and I will be moving to Savannah this spring, and I am trying to find out information about the area. I am curently completing a teacher education program, and will be starting my first year of teaching in Savannah on an alternative type license.

I am curious as to the quality of schools in Savannah. I have been doing some web surfing- and was curious to see what local opinion of the public schools are. I am interested in teaching in a Title I school, but I will take what job I can get- I am just thrilled to be starting finally!

I must admit- I am originally a small town, midwestern girl and I am intimidated by the size of Savannah. It will be the largest city that I have ever lived in. I would like to find a place to live that is a little off the beaten path- but not too far for commuting to and from work. Of course, I want to live in a safe area that is family friendly.

Will your husband be working at Ft. Stewart or Hunter Army Air Field? That will make a little bit of difference in what will be close to his job and what wouldn't. I'm sure some of the others can give you better advice on what would be "off the beaten path", though, as I'm not that familiar with most of the different areas around Savannah. =)

For more than a decade the Savannah-Chatham school system has focused on reform. There are many students served by this system that live below the poverty line with accompanying academic and developmental problems.

The school system's website provides FYI on many alternative programs that have been implemented.

Do you have a school assignment yet? That would help posters advise you on where to look for housing.

I don't think you need to be intimidated by Savannah.

Don't be intimidated by Savannah. I think you will like it. I think it has a small town feel. You should definately check out Georgetown for housing and for schools. Georgetown is a 5 minute drive to Hunter and there are many military families who live there. Georgetown is one of the better grade schools in Savannah. My kids went to school there and the teachers and administration are very good. The school is just a couple of minutes from almost every neighborhood in Georgetown.

My son works at Hunter and he lives in Pooler. It seems like a nice town. I don't know about the school system there, though.

Savannah is such a great area. I came from a small town...you know the kind with four lights that look like a tick tack toe board. I thought the "Big City" was not going to be for me. I was wrong. It's not the bigness of Atlanta. It's spread out and more laid back. Where Atlanta is a busy, go go go city. Savannah has many great parks and things for families to do. If you are looking for more of a down home town, I would suggest Pooler, Rincon, or Garden City. They are all really nice places with pretty good school systems. I am a Real Estate agent so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I will be glad to help in any way I can.

I agree that Georgetown is one of the better school areas, and the most ideal as far as combining commute time with quality of school. The housing in the area is quite diverse, and you can be sure you'd be able to find what you're looking for.

I Live in Effingham County and work in Savannah; I would NEVER send my child to a Savannah public school. They are terrible! Everything from racism, crime, gangs. Just look at the crime rate for yourself. Elementary students bring knives to school; it’s a dangerous place. I will admit the commute is tough from Effingham; with traffic I drive about two hours a day. However; The Pooler area is growing: low crime, new homes and restaurants, etc. and only 15 minutes from the down town historic area.

Please take the last post with a grain of salt. I don't think the poster has an unbiased viewpoint of the South. Yes, there have been problems in SOME schools in the Chatham-Savannah system, just as there are with SOME schools everywhere, North, South, East or West. But, generally speaking, most of the schools are good.
