Just wondering...

Here on the southside, I hear "booms" that sound like thunder every night after dark. Does anyone know what these "booms" are?

You're probably hearing "bombs" or other munitions firing from Ft. Stewart. It's normal. You can often hear it from the Southside.

I heard it at my homes in Midway, Guyton, and Pooler too. That base is freaking HUGE.

So I know this post is old, but we recently bought a house on the water on the south side, behind Armstrong area.
People above said it was munitions from Ft. Stewart? Wouldn't surprise me.. But they go on for hours, sometimes all night, well into the early morning.
The base would still be testing munitions at 1&2am?

Thanks!

I live in the Berwick area of Savannah. If you made a direct line out of my backyard my house is two and a half miles from Hunter Army Airfield. Daily I hear window rattling sounds coming from the base as well as house shaking low flying aircraft of all types. However, almost every night from around midnight on there are very loud thunder like sounds that go on for hours. Does anyone know what these loud thunder like sounds are?

We've been hearing them too. Hubby said it sounds like what he heard when he was in the Army. I LOVE watching fighters going over head -grew up 5 miles from Stewart in Newburgh, NY and remember seeing them all the time during the Vietnam war. It's a thrill watching all the different planes. Good thing Hubby knows what they are and can tell me. Now the other day over at Planet Fitness-having a flying "whale" come over low was cool!
