Well, they could have asked any third-year mechanical engineering student for an explanation out of the Fluid Mechanics book.

Either the "scientists" writing this purported paper, or the "journalist" writing this clickbait article, or both, lacks a fundamental understanding of the laws of motion, fluid mechanics, or animal motion.
